Dental implant treatment
A dental implant is a small screw like medical device which is surgically implanted in the jaw bone where missing teeth are to be replaced permanently.
Why should you consider dental implants?
If you have lost one or more teeth, you may be all too familiar with the unpleasant consequences. For many, missing teeth lead to an unattractive smile, embarrassment from loose dentures, and pain or difficulty while eating. Traditional dentistry can provide replacements for missing teeth using bridges, removable partial dentures; however, each of these has its problems. Bridgework usually involves altering natural teeth to provide a stable foundation for support of replacement teeth. Partial dentures and complete dentures can, at times, be very unstable leading to denture sores or speech difficulties. Many complete and partial denture using patients notice that the dentures have become loose over a period of time (particularly lower denture), this problem results because of bone atrophy and can only be effectively treated by supporting the denture with implants.
How are dental implants placed?
Dental implantation is a meticulously planned procedure and usually completed in two stages:
Stage 1 is the actual implant placement, a process generally performed in the dental clinic under local anesthesia with some premedication to help make the patient more comfortable and to minimize any postoperative pain or discomfort. Using precise, gentle surgical techniques, the implants are placed into the jawbone where missing teeth are to be replaced. An undisturbed healing period of 3 to 6 months is necessary while implant unite with the bone. This helps ensure a strong, solid foundation for replacement teeth. During this time, temporary bridges or dentures may be used to minimize any cosmetic or chewing inconvenience. Most patients indicate that the discomfort immediately after the surgery is minimal and they are able to return to work the next day.
Stage 2 involves creating and attaching the new tooth or teeth (in the form of Bridge/crowns/dentures) to the anchored implant(s) in your jaw. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or complete dentures. Many variations in the implantation procedure are possible depending upon bone condition, need for bone grafting, type of prosthesis planned, immediate implantation after tooth/teeth extraction, immediate prosthesis construction etc.
